Getting ready to move into a private boarding school like Randolph-Macon Academy is an exciting chapter, especially if it’s your first time living away from home. But with all that excitement comes one important question: what do you pack?
At our private boarding school, our boarding students live in a structured, supportive environment that helps them thrive academically and personally. From drills and sports to our leadership training programs, daily life here is full of opportunities, but it also requires some essential supplies. Whether you’re a new cadet or returning student, packing the right items will help you feel prepared and confident for the school year ahead.
This blog post breaks down what you need to bring for a smooth start to dorm living at our preparatory school in Virginia.
Academic Supplies
R-MA’s academic program is challenging and rewarding, designed to prepare you for the rigor of college and beyond. Our curriculum includes advanced placement (AP) classes, pre-professional pathways, and a Portrait of a Graduate model that emphasizes critical thinking and independence.
To support your success, R-MA provides each student with a school-issued laptop for academic use. While you’re welcome to bring a personal device, please note that its use is subject to restrictions in dormitories to encourage healthy study habits and a focused environment. You’ll also want to pack essentials like notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, and highlighters.
Uniforms and Clothing
As a military boarding school, we provide a full suite of uniforms for a variety of activities, ranging from cadet wear and ceremonial dress to workout gear and casual clothing for downtime. Please note: official school uniforms are available exclusively on campus through the R-MA School Store or the Parents Association’s Clothing Sale.
While uniforms cover most daily needs, bringing some of your own clothing can add a layer of comfort and personal expression. Virginia’s seasons shift from warm September afternoons to frosty winter mornings, so we recommend packing layers, along with a sturdy pair of shoes or boots.
You’ll also want to include a few formal outfits for student-led events and formal occasions. Whether it’s an honor council session, a public presentation, or a community service outing, a clean, polished appearance is essential.

Dorm Room Essentials
Your dorm room is your home base, so it should be comfortable, organized, and ready to support your daily routine.
Dorm rooms at R-MA are already designed to be all of that, but a few personal items of yours can help you get settled more easily. If you have a favorite pillow or comfort item from home, bring it along. Small touches can go a long way in easing the transition to dorm living.

Leadership, Athletics, and Activities
At our private boarding school, leadership isn’t just a concept; it’s a daily practice. Through our Character and Leadership Development Program, military drills, and cadet-led initiatives, students are empowered to take ownership of their growth.
From joining clubs and organizations to mentoring peers through our Honor Code system, the opportunities are diverse and deeply meaningful. Bring any equipment or gear that supports your extracurricular interests.
A Private Boarding School Community That Supports You
Packing for boarding school is more than preparing for a new environment; it’s preparing to join a community where you’ll be seen, supported, and challenged. R-MA fosters a sense of belonging that runs deep. Our small class sizes, supportive faculty, and focus on personal development help students feel right at home, even while they’re learning to live more independently.
From day one, you’ll be part of something bigger: a student body committed to excellence in and out of the classroom.
