2023 Summer Programs
Randolph-Macon Academy is pleased to announce our 2023 Summer Programs. R-MA is committed to providing a safe, fun and academically enriching experience for talented students from June 25 to July 21, 2023 on our 135-acre campus.
Upper School (grades 9-12) students will receive high school credits (transferable) after successful completion of their classes. Students have an array of course options specifically tailored to cover topics during a shorter span of time. Students may also choose to take Aviation courses as part of a wider selection of electives.
Middle School (grades 6-8) students will receive enrichment opportunities geared towards enhancing their academic careers throughout middle and high schools. Students choose 3 courses from an array of options and participate in 3 full-day field trips per week. Students will also learn safe practices for responsible digital citizens as part of our mentoring program.
Aviation Explorers is open to Upper School and rising 9th grade students. The Program includes classroom instruction for Flight Training and Drone Applications – both of which provide hands-on training that can lead to a gateway of new career industries around the globe. Students have a unique opportunity to experience flight time on two school-owned Cessna aircraft and state-of-the-art drones throughout various parts of the summer program.
The University Visits program provides students with 4 unique college tours in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area. Students take an SAT Prep class (only available in this program) and one academic class for the entire 4-week program. In addition, students receive guidance for university applications from the R-MA Academic Team. Students have full access to the R-MA campus and all available activities outside of the scheduled college tour schedule.
All students receive age-appropriate activities supervised by caring staff, organic dining options and available dormitory option complete with newly renovated lounges and dorm parents on each available floor.

Course Descriptions
English 9:
A focus on building vocabulary, reading and writing skills across literary genres and an introduction to high school research skills.
English 10:
A focus on world literature and skills needed for well-researched and argued term papers.
English 11:
A focus on American literature and advanced research and writing skills needed for college-level preparation.
Algebra I:
An introduction to basic algebraic concepts and skill development with the goal of developing skills in arithmetic, algebra, and logic.
Algebra II:
A higher level of mathematical thinking and greater skill in working with numbers and algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities. Additional focus on complex numbers, functions, linear systems, and trigonomety.
Geometry:
A systematic study of the nature of deductive, inductive, and analytic proofs through an examination of the properties of circles, triangles, and other figures.
Biology:
A focus on the biological structures and their functions at multiple levels of organization in living organisms, as well as explore the patterns, processes and systems within biology.
United States History:
An overview of the development of the American nation from its foundation to the modern period.
Modern World History:
An overview of major historical events in the eastern and western hemispheres from 1450 to the present.
World Religions:
An overview of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism and the cultures that surround them today.
Spanish I:
An introduction to the vocabulary and grammar of the modern Spanish language with an emphasis on speaking and writing.
Computer Science:
Focus on software, coding platforms, robotics, 3-D printing and laser-cutting technology to help students develop answers to the world’s problems.
ESL – English as a Second Language:
Individualized instruction for all levels of English language learners. Focus is placed on reading and speaking skills as well as TOEFLⓇ testing material and American culture.

Middle School Courses & Schedules
Course Descriptions
Open to all students in Grades 6-8, R-MA provides a dynamic and enriching experience for students to explore a myriad of subjects designed to gauge intellectual curiosity and development. Students may choose up to 4 courses:
Introduction to Aviation:
Students receive hands-on instruction in a fun and supportive environment. Student have the opportunity to race Tello drones around the gymnasium, compete in a best tricks competition, and take photos of different structures on campus utilizing drone hardware and software. Students also explore the different careers and laws that are associated with drones. A trip to the nearby Front Royal-Warren County Airport will include a visit to R-MA’s airplane hanger and tour of our Cessna aircrafts.
Robotics:
Students receive an introduction to coding, engineering, and programming. Using a LEGO robot, students have the opportunity to complete different missions using previous challenges from the First LEGO League Challenge series. Students can expect to work in small groups to collaborate and problem solve on a regular basis in this class.
Music production:
If you love making and recording music, this class is for you. Using our digital piano lab, students will create their own beats. Learn about the equipment needed to take your work to the next level. Using R-MA’s Macbook Air laptops, participants in music production will learn the basics of the Garageband software that allows students to create music and podcasts.
Creative Writing:
This class is for students who love using their imagination to engage in creative writing. Utilize R-MA’s beautiful 135-acre campus to write and read short stories. Try writing your own songs and poems by using your imagination and inspiration of the great outdoors. After finding a shady tree to lean up against, you may just be amazed by what shows up on the paper.
Art:
Students compare and contrast different styles of art from a variety of times, places, and cultures. Activities include drawing and painting while creating works of art that reflects an idea, emotion or point of view. Students also use the elements of art to explore and talk about what he or she sees in the physical world.
Fitness Class:
Students identify and explore skill-related components of fitness (agility, balance, power, and speed) specific to various activities. This class gives students an opportunity to complete a self-assessment that will allow them to set fitness goals that can be carried out after camp ends. Students also engage in discussions focused on the proper use of equipment and self-management skills in relation to safety in physical activity.
ESL – English as a Second Language:
This class is a combined skills course that will focus on improving listening, speaking, reading and writing in the English language. Students can expect emphasis on recognizing and pronouncing the most commonly used vocabulary in English. For more advanced students, a focus will be on writing several basic sentences about personal topics with grammatical accuracy.

Aviation Explorers Program
We are thrilled to offer one of our most popular summer programs, now more robust than ever. This comprehensive program includes the following courses open to students in Grades 9-12:
Flight Training
Students explore Aviation by training in aircraft and simulators, learning from industry professionals. Students have the opportunity to complete the FAA remote pilot (drone) certification. Students receive first-class instruction in the air and on the ground while discovering unlimited opportunities in aviation careers.
Drone Applications
The Aviation Explorers Program also includes instruction for unmanned aviation, or drones. Students participate in hands-on flight training for aerial photography, advanced data collection for mapping and 3D modeling. Students may also complete the FAA remote pilot certification.
University Visits Summer Program
The University Visits program provides students with 4 unique college tours in the greater Washington DC metropolitan area. Students take an SAT Prep class (only available in this program) and one academic class for the entire 4-week program. In addition, students receive guidance for university applications from the R-MA Academic Team. Students have full access to the R-MA campus and all available activities outside of the scheduled college tour schedule.
University Application Guidance
Students meet with the R-MA Academic Team on a weekly basis to discuss program progress with SAT classes and college application goals. Students receive guidance on application mapping, essay selection and setting realistic expectations to ensure best practices for the upcoming school year.

Dormitories
R-MA is proud to offer dormitories with renovated student lounges and caring dorm parents on each floor. Middle and Upper School students are housed in separate dorm buildings. Students are further separated by gender.
All dorm rooms are equipped with a bed, desk, closet and central air-conditioning. Upper School Female dorm rooms are equipped with a private bathroom. Upper School Male dorm rooms include a sink and hallway bathrooms are available on each floor. Middle School Dorms feature hallway bathrooms separated by gender.
Newly renovated student lounges include comfortable, socially distanced seating arrangements and individual workspaces. An array of ping pong, foosball and air-hockey tables await with flat screen TVs for movie and trivia nights.
Activities
Students are provided with a variety of activities taking place on the R-MA campus and in nearby surrounding areas. On-campus activities take place on our 135-acre campus which include scavenger hunts, paintball sessions, outdoor and indoor movie viewings, game nights, campfires with s’mores as well as free-time for students to relax.
Off-campus activities are abundant and truly add to the summer experience. All field-trips include the sole usage or R-MA buses and vans driven by licensed and trained school staff. Such activities include:

Dining Services
A true highlight of the summer, R-MA offers a variety of dining options during the summer. Students enjoy freshly prepared meals from internationally inspired cuisines as well as an array of organic vegetable options and fresh-cut fruit – daily! Dessert options are also available on a daily basis.
