With a tough schedule of three consecutive games, with the third being the feature sporting event for Homecoming Weekend, soccer coaches Chris Peter and Stephen Latham made a tough call to rest their starters as much as possible in the second of the three games.
Coach Latham wrote about the results of that decision:
On Friday, October 18th, the Jackets played their second game in two days, away to TCS. We started with just 2 starters on the field as we rotated the squad, yet we held them to a slender 1-0 lead at HT from a PK. JJ Banek-Gabelle saved a second PK in the first half. In the second half the game continued to be tight, but TCS managed to score 3 late goals to take the game 4-0. However, the Jackets can take heart from the fact that the starters were rested for most of the game and yet the game was in the balance until late in the game.
At Homecoming, the Jackets put on an entertaining show in their third game in as many days. Yet they looked fresh and eager against St. John's. The Jackets quickly levelled an early goal from St. John's to equalize 1-1 after 5 minutes through Alpha Diallo. Then Tire Bayo-Adeyemo went up for a corner and we led 2-1. JJ Banek-Gabelle was moved out of GK and scored two goals in the second half as the score moved on to 4-2. Isaac Yi scored a fifth to bring the score to 5-2. After a fight-back from St. John's to bring the score to 5-4, Joseph Afotey-Agbo scored a sixth for the Jackets to give us an exciting 6-4 win.
