At Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), we believe that grit is the foundation of success. It’s the determination to overcome challenges, the resilience to keep going when the path gets tough, and the courage to grow through every experience. As a private school dedicated to shaping adaptive leaders of character, we strive to instill this essential quality in our students.
In this blog, we celebrate three remarkable role models whose journeys embody the spirit of grit. Their stories inspire our students to persevere, leverage the power of Rise, and pursue lives of meaning and success.
1. Brigadier General David Wesley: A Visionary Leader
Hailed as a leader and visionary, Brigadier General David C. Wesley, USAF, Retired, is a shining example of grit and determination. With over 26 years of active-duty service in the U.S. Air Force, General Wesley faced countless challenges yet consistently rose to the occasion.
From serving as the Staff Judge Advocate at multiple Air Force commands to becoming the 11th President of R-MA, General Wesley’s journey reflects perseverance, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence. His leadership is grounded in a strong sense of purpose and an unrelenting drive to contribute to the success of others.
For our students, General Wesley’s career reminds us that grit means staying steadfast in the face of challenges and continually striving for improvement. His example aligns with R-MA’s mission of producing intellectually curious, self-aware, and resilient leaders.
2. CJ Maegan Tuldanes: Turning Challenges Into Opportunities
When CJ Maegan Tuldanes was not initially appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), she didn’t let disappointment define her. Instead, she embraced the opportunity of a Falcon Scholarship and chose to attend R-MA as part of her journey.
CJ describes her first week at our private school as “the toughest week of my life,” transitioning from civilian to military life. But through trust, camaraderie, and pushing herself beyond her comfort zone, she grew physically, academically, and mentally. Her experience reflects grit in its truest form—breaking barriers and rising stronger from every challenge.
Now prepared to join the USAFA Class of 2028, CJ’s story is a testament to the importance of resilience, hard work, and determination. Her journey inspires our students to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow and thrive, embodying the R-MA spirit of self-discipline, leadership, and perseverance.
3. Joshua Cline: An Academic Trailblazer
Joshua Cline, an R-MA graduate from the Class of 2019, exemplifies intellectual grit. In addition to graduating from George Washington University, Joshua has become a published author, contributing a piece titled “220th Aviation Company” to On Point: The Journal of Army History.
Joshua’s commitment to history and his work with the Army Historical Foundation reflect his passion for learning and determination to make meaningful contributions. Joshua’s story is a powerful reminder that perseverance and curiosity can lead to extraordinary achievements. His example aligns with R-MA’s vision of graduates as producers and consumers of knowledge, critical thinkers, and problem solvers.
Fostering Grit at Our Private School
At R-MA, grit is essential for preparing students to thrive. Through rigorous academics, character-building experiences, or inspiring role models like General Wesley, CJ Tuldanes, and Joshua Cline, we equip our students with the tools to persevere and thrive.
This commitment is reflected in our Portrait of a Graduate, which envisions R-MA alumni as critical thinkers, problem solvers, and compassionate leaders embracing lifelong learning and service. By fostering grit alongside these qualities, we prepare students to excel academically and make meaningful contributions to the world.
If you’re seeking a preparatory school in Virginia where grit, leadership, and a commitment to developing well-rounded graduates are nurtured, R-MA can help your child rise to their full potential.
