R-MA’s Aviation Pathway: Planes, Drones & STEM Careers

Few opportunities capture the imagination of young learners like the chance to fly a plane or pilot a drone. At Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), students don’t just dream about aviation; they live it. The Aviation Pathway is a signature program at our private boarding school, giving students the rare chance to combine hands-on flight training with STEM-focused academics. Whether in the cockpit of a Cessna, at the controls of a drone, or in a physics classroom, students build the confidence and expertise that put them ahead of the curve.

A Pathway Designed for Exploration

The Aviation Pathway was designed to spark curiosity and open doors to careers in aviation, aerospace, and STEM. Students take part in engaging courses, field trips, guest lectures, and real-world experiences that bring classroom learning to life.

With options ranging from Exploring Aviation and Ground School to specialized courses in Drone Applications and Advanced Drone Applications, participants gain both technical knowledge and practical skills. The pathway culminates in a senior-year capstone project, allowing each student to dive deeper into an area of personal interest.

Flight and Drone Training

One of the most exciting parts of the program is the opportunity to fly. R-MA owns two Cessna 172S aircraft, which students use for flight instruction. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they practice everything from basic maneuvers to cross-country navigation. Many even earn solo wings or Private Pilot Certification before graduation, which is a remarkable accomplishment for high school students.

Drone training is equally immersive. Students gain hours of flight time across a range of UAV platforms, learning aerial photography, data mapping, emergency response applications, and more. By the time they complete the program, they are well prepared to sit for the FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot Certificate.

Building Skills for the Future

The Aviation Pathway goes far beyond flying. Through projects, labs, and teamwork, students strengthen critical skills like problem-solving, communication, and leadership. These abilities are essential not just in aviation, but in any STEM-related career.

For example, the Advanced Drone Applications course challenges students with project-based learning experiences where they must research, plan, and execute professional-level drone missions. Along the way, they develop adaptability, organizational skills, and confidence, qualities that benefit them in college, careers, and life.

A Supportive Boarding Community

At our private boarding school, we provide a supportive environment where students learn as much from each other as they do in the classroom. Friendships built in the hangar or drone lab extend into dorm living, creating a true sense of community.

Students share the excitement of flight labs, study together for physics exams, and cheer each other on as they work toward their capstone projects. This balance of academics, activities, and close-knit boarding life helps young people grow into confident leaders.

Prepare for Tomorrow’s Opportunities at Our Private Boarding School

The aviation and aerospace industries are expanding quickly, with a growing need for skilled pilots and professionals. R-MA’s Aviation Pathway introduces students to these opportunities early, giving them practical experience and insight into career paths they may want to pursue. Some graduates continue into aviation programs in college, while others build on their STEM foundation in engineering, technology, or science fields.

The Aviation Pathway at our private boarding school gives students the chance to learn by doing, from flying aircraft to operating drones and exploring real-world STEM applications. It’s a program that builds confidence, opens doors to future careers, and provides experiences that few high school students have the opportunity to enjoy.
