Randolph-Macon Academy’s Board of Trustees officially welcomed four new members during the board meeting held April 12, 2014: Major General David Puster, Eric Carlson, Lucy Williams Hooper, and Glenn R. Carrington.
Puster, a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, was Randolph-Macon Academy’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Puster is a 1975 graduate of Randolph-Macon Academy; he is currently serving as the Commanding General for the 84th Training Command (Unit Readiness) in Fort Knox, KY. He holds an MBA from The College of William and Mary. Prior to being called up to active duty, he was the Deputy General Manager for the Department of Energy at the National Training Center for Chenega Global Services.
Carlson, a 1973 graduate of the Academy, is a partner and CEO of CK&D in Los Angeles. CK&D is a leading cause marketing and media group that works closely with national and global non-profits and Fortune 500 companies in the area of brand, strategy, content, CSR and fundraising. Carlson has written and produced for television and motion pictures and is an active member of the Writers Guild of America and Producers Guild of America. He currently serves on the board of The American Heart Association and the Southern California chapter of the United Way.
Hooper is the daughter of Col Arvin Williams, USAF Retired, who worked at R-MA in various positions from 1947 to 1968, and was president of Randolph-Macon Academy from 1969 to 1978. Hooper now works as the Director of the Fixed Income Department at Davenport and Company. She comes to the Randolph-Macon Board of Trustees with experience in education boards; she was on the Board of Trustees at Randolph College (formerly Randolph-Macon Women’s College) for 12 years and was the chairperson of the board as the college made the transition from all-women to co-ed. Carrington has had an illustrious law career for over 30 years, both in private practice and the government. He is now the National Tax Director for Client Services at Ernst & Young LLP (EY). Carrington is a frequent lecturer at the Practising Law Institute (PLI), a non-profit continuing legal education organization, and the author of Tax Accounting in Mergers and Acquisitions. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Norfolk State University. Carrington first became associated with Randolph-Macon Academy through his son Julian, who graduated from R-MA in 2008.
Also added to the board during the past year were ex-officio members Bishop Young Jin Cho, who is the Bishop of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, and Rev. John B. Peters. Peters served as the pastor at United Methodist churches in the Virginia Conference in Newport News, Harrisonburg, and Winchester. He retired from the pulpit in June 2013 and is now the Director of the Association of Educational Institutions of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), founded in 1892, is a college-preparatory, coeducational day and boarding school for students in grades 6 through 12. Students in grades 9-12 participate in R-MA’s 91st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) and have the option to participate in a unique flight program. R-MA is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is located in Front Royal, VA.
