From classroom presentations to stage performances in our performing arts program, from morning briefings to student leadership roles, communication is everywhere at R-MA, and that’s by design.
At Randolph-Macon Academy, helping students find their voice is a key part of the journey. We know that strong communication skills, especially public speaking, aren’t just useful in school. They’re essential in college, in leadership, and life.
Whether a student is naturally outspoken or a little more reserved, we create space for them to grow their confidence and learn how to speak with clarity, purpose, and heart.
Public Speaking Starts in the Classroom
Learning to speak well starts with being heard. At our college prep school, teachers don’t just lecture; they invite students into the conversation. Students are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and present their work out loud. The more they practice, the more they grow in confidence.
We don’t expect perfection. Instead, we support students in becoming clear, respectful, and thoughtful speakers, qualities that serve them well, no matter where they go after graduation.
Building Confidence Through Performing Arts
Some students find their voice through our performing arts programs. Whether it’s acting in a play, singing in the choir, giving presentations during symposiums, or working behind the scenes, the performing arts offer a unique way to express emotion, connect with others, and overcome stage fright.
We’ve seen students who once avoided the spotlight now shine on stage, literally. The experience of speaking or performing in front of others helps students become more comfortable in their own skin and teaches them how to connect with an audience, both formally and informally.

Leading by Example
R-MA’s character and leadership program gives students real opportunities to practice speaking with purpose. From leading meetings to guiding peers through challenges, our student leaders learn how to motivate others, speak respectfully in tough situations, and take initiative.
This isn’t just about holding a title. It’s about showing up, speaking up, and learning how to communicate effectively in real-world situations. Our students leave with more than leadership experience; they leave with the ability to express themselves with confidence and integrity.
Speaking in Real Life
Beyond the classroom and stage, students at R-MA have plenty of chances to practice public speaking in everyday life. They get opportunities to present ideas during Honor Council meetings, lead community service projects, make meaningful contributions at their clubs, or speak in chapel. These moments may seem small, but they’re powerful; each one helps students become more comfortable with who they are and how they speak.
And because we’re a college prep school, these experiences are intentional. We’re preparing students to succeed in interviews, college seminars, group projects, and any moment where they need to speak with clarity and confidence.

Why It Matters
Every student has something worth saying. At R-MA, we help them say it well. Through academics, performing arts, leadership, and real-life opportunities, students learn how to speak with courage and confidence, now and in the future.
Whether our graduates go on to lead, teach, build, perform, or serve, we know they’ll be ready to share their ideas and stand behind them.
