Partnering with Parents: Supporting Your Child’s Journey at R-MA

Choosing the right private boarding school in Virginia isn’t just about academics; it’s about finding a place where your child will be understood, supported, and guided. At our day and boarding school, we believe that student success is a team effort that includes parents every step of the way.

Through consistent communication, mentorship, and a strong Parents Association, we build a partnership with families that helps students grow both academically and personally..

Open Communication Builds Trust

From the very beginning, families at our day and boarding school are treated as valued partners. We maintain regular communication with parents, offering updates on student progress, achievements, and any challenges that arise. This transparency builds trust and allows families to stay connected with their child’s development, even when they’re miles away.

When students need additional support, our academic team works with content teachers to coordinate accommodations tailored to each learner’s needs. Whether it’s adjusting workload, offering tutoring, or helping students improve time management, we’re here to ensure each student is set up to succeed.

The Role of the Parents Association at R-MA Day and Boarding School

Community is everything at R-MA. That’s where our Parents Association (PA) comes in. The PA creates opportunities for families to engage with the school, fostering communication, school spirit, and unity among parents, guardians, and faculty. While the PA does not create policy, it plays an important role in enhancing the student experience through event planning, volunteer efforts, and resource sharing.

Our families appreciate the sense of belonging this community offers. Being part of a vibrant day and boarding school means never having to go it alone.

Mentorship and Personalized College Guidance

From the moment students arrive at our day and boarding school, we assign each of them a dedicated faculty or staff mentor. These mentors check in regularly with students, offering support in everything from class schedules to college planning. Mentors can also take students off campus for more casual meetings, providing opportunities for personal connection and informal college conversations.

In parallel, our college counseling office provides individualized guidance to every student. Our counselors take the time to understand each student’s strengths, goals, and interests, whether they’re looking at liberal arts programs or STEM-focused institutions. We help students explore schools, choose the right courses, plan summer activities, and prepare for standardized tests.

College Planning Starts Early

At R-MA, we believe in starting early. That’s why our college counselor begins working with students in grade 9. This long-term approach means students don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed when it’s time to start applying. By the time they’re seniors, most already have a clear understanding of their next steps.

Each student receives a personalized College Readiness Plan, backed by a detailed College Counseling Guidebook. Combined with our culture of “Going to College,” these tools help every student and every family approach the admissions process with clarity and confidence.

A Shared Mission

Parents choose R-MA not just for academic excellence, but because they want a school that feels like an extension of their home. Our shared mission is to guide students through their most formative years, helping them grow into confident, thoughtful, and resilient young adults.

We don’t just teach students, we build relationships with the families who support them. Because at R-MA, student success is a team effort.
