Hoping to get their first win, the R-MA Female Yellow Jackets stormed the court to face Chelsea Academy.
With both teams having only nine girls, endurance and pure guts would determine the outcome of the game.
In the first quarter, 8th grader Olachi Agba and 7th grader Lily Grossman took charge of the court scoring four points each. During the second quarter, Chelsea buckled down on their defense and held the Yellow Jackets to just two additional points, scored by 8th grader Citlaly Sosa. Going into the half, the score was Chelsea-8, R-MA-10.
After a riveting half time, our girls dominated the court with baskets made by 7th grader Jessalyn Brooks followed by another two points from Citlaly. Capping off the quarter, Lily continued her display with yet another 4 points. However, Chelsea continued to keep up, with four more points of their own.
Going into the fourth quarter with a little wiggle room, the Yellow Jackets were able to breathe a little easier. This was especially true after a lay-up made by 8th grader Princess Uzoma. Also in the mix again, Lily Grossman added to her point total with a fast break layup of her own. Final score: Chelsea-18, R-MA 20.
Notables: Other girls with playing time, but couldn’t quite hit their mark included Nafisah Muhtar who was a key player coming off the bench; Jotrina Vamboi helping out immensely on the defensive side of the court; Yazmin Blell who was critical in helping the other forwards get some rest while she grabbed a handful of rebounds; and Halima Salami who is developing her skills at a fast rate to become a pivotal player on our team.
