On Saturday, February 1, the R-MA Boys' Basketball Team traveled to the Powhatan School in Boyce, Virginia, to participate in the Powhatan Invitational Tournament. We played in opening game at 9:00 A.M. against the Fresta Valley Pioneers. The young Jackets got off to a quick start and never looked back. At halftime the score was 25-10. During the second half we were able to empty the bench with everyone receiving playing time. The final score was 47-20. Leading the way for R-MA was Stanley Richards with 15 points. Samuel Uzoma added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Cailen Baggett added 10 points from the perimeter. John Backo played a good defensive game and added 6 points. Ryan Latham scored 4 points and collected 12 rebounds.
At 1:00 P.M. we played in the championship game against the other undefeated team, the host Powhatan Chiefs. We had watched them play in previous games and we were able to prepare for their style of offense. The Jackets once again were able to take the early lead but at halftime the score was tied 19-19. The Jackets started the second half with three field goals and took a lead they would never relinquish. The game was a very physical, intense contest with numerous time outs, fouls, and all-around good play. The Chiefs were forced to foul at the end of the game but Stanley Richards was able to convert on 4 for 6 free throws to keep the Jacket lead. When the buzzer ended the game, the Jackets were the winners of the Powhatan Invitational by the score of 40-31. Stanley Richards led all scorers with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Samuel Uzoma added 11 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the day. Ryan Latham had a strong game scoring 8 points and collecting 6 rebounds. John Backo, again, played a good defensive game and added 5 points. Cailen Baggett played tough defense and contributed 4 points. Stanley Richards and Samuel Uzoma were selected to the All-tournament Team.
With this win the young Jackets are now 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the VMSC. The next game will be on Monday, February 3, at R-MA starting at 4:30. Thanks to the parents, grandparents, students, and fans for coming out and supporting your R-MA Yellow Jackets.
