Applying to Private Military High Schools: Don’t Delay

The end of the school year is rushing upon us. At this point, many families are realizing that their current school environment has not worked this year, and start to look for a change. Some will consider private military high schools as an option for the next school year—the smaller classes, challenging academics, and structured program can help many students focus on their academics, thus bringing up their grades. Fortunately, many of these schools are still accepting applications for the fall.

But you’d better hurry.

I’m not suggesting you hurry because the schools will fill up. While possible, you never know until you call the school and ask if they’re still accepting applications.

The main reason I believe you should hurry is that once school lets out, applying to a private military high school will be more difficult.

Now is the time you need to request transcripts from your current school office and request letters of recommendation from your teachers. Once the school year ends, many school offices shut down or go to shorter hours, and getting transcripts is very difficult. Tracking down a teacher to write a letter of recommendation is almost impossible.

In addition, you should visit all schools you’re considering while school is in session, if at all possible. Private military high schools vary greatly, and getting the opportunity to see the school in action can help you get a “feel” for whether the school is a good fit for your son or daughter.  Since many private schools let out around Memorial Day weekend, time is running out!
