3 Great Reasons to Explore Visual & Performing Arts at Our Coed Private School

The visual and performing arts program at R-MA offers a community dedicated to the experience of beauty in music and art. Students take an active role in developing their artistic interests, providing them with an enjoyable outlet for personal growth and expression that will see them through the years to come.

The benefits of studying visual and performing arts extend well beyond the walls of a theatre or art studio. At R-MA, students develop important life skills in communication, creative thinking, and determination. By engaging their mind in artistic forms, students reap the rewards of positive development in the academic, social, and emotional realms. Read on to discover what the visual and performing arts program has to offer our students.

1. Fostering Community Bonding

At R-MA, our performing arts program offers numerous opportunities to connect with fellow students in a fun, open, and supportive space. From chorus to the theatre, students can explore their artistic interests while building friendships with like-minded peers in the community. For students looking to involve themselves in the dramatic arts, R-MA’s theatre program offers an intramural Drama Club for high school students and a Drama elective for middle schoolers. Both newcomers and theatre fanatics are welcomed to take on roles as actors, designers, playwrights, managers, and backstage crew.

For the musically-minded students, chorus and band offer a chance to improve your skills while building a lasting network of friends to practice and perform with on a regular basis. Whatever your niche, performing arts at our boarding school ensures students work together, no matter the discipline they choose.

2. Teaching Discipline Through the Arts

In any field, improvement requires consistent practice. The arts can be a rigorous and demanding educational medium that teaches the value of dedication to one’s craft. Setting a time for practice and working towards excellence are both practices that can be applied to other areas of life. The consistency that training requires allows students to develop personal discipline.

For example, those who take the studio art program at our private academy will maintain a portfolio documenting their accomplishments in 2D and 3D artwork throughout the year. The final portfolio will demonstrate the experience, technical skill, concentration, and growth that comes out of practice. The reward from this progress is extremely satisfying and teaches students the value of commitment. Likewise, music rehearsals and the study of musical theory build productive work habits that can be applied to numerous academic and professional spheres down the line.

3. Building Confidence in Students at Our Private Academy

The performing and visual arts program is an exercise in confidence as much as it is creative expression. The practice of performing arts – whether that be drama or music – offers young people the chance to get up on stage and share their skills with other people. This is an important part of any child’s development. It teaches students to work through any fear of embarrassment, find confidence in their abilities, and face challenges with resilience.

R-MA offers numerous fun and supportive occasions to develop this approach, with the annual Christmas play, talent shows, open mic nights, and filmmaking competitions. Additionally, students in our studio art program will have an opportunity to present their work in an R-MA fine arts showcase. In the process, they may push themselves outside of their comfort zone and learn to take pride in presenting their work to the public. With confidence in themselves, our students find there is no end to what they can achieve.
