New Tax Law & Your 2025-2026 Charitable Giving
New tax and spending legislation was signed into law on July 4, 2025, and provisions of this legislation could impact how and when you choose to give to Randolph-Macon Academy. Some key changes that go into effect on January 1, 2026 are noted below:
- If you itemize: Beginning in 2026, you will need to give at least 0.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) to claim a charitable deduction. You may want to consider maximizing your giving in 2025 before this new rule takes effect.
- If you take the standard deduction and do not itemize: Beginning in 2026, a limited additional deduction of up to $1,000 in qualifying charitable gifts for single filers (or $2,000 for married couples filing jointly) will be introduced. Your gift, no matter the size, could help reduce your tax liability.
- If you are in the top 37% tax bracket: Beginning in 2026, you can claim a 35% tax deduction for charitable gifts, instead of the current 37%. You may want to consider increasing your giving while current rules still apply.
- If you use a donor-advised fund (DAF) for your charitable giving: Beginning in 2026, if you take the standard deduction and do not itemize, you will no longer be able to claim contributions to a DAF toward the limited additional charitable deduction. Donors who are in the top 37% tax bracket will also see a reduced benefit for each dollar of itemized deduction, from the 37% rate in 2025 to the 35% rate in 2026. With these new rules coming, your financial advisor may suggest “bunching” multiple years of giving in 2025, to lock in this year’s deduction while continuing to support R-MA’s mission in the years to come.
- The new law makes permanent some provisions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This includes the current tax brackets ranging from 0% to 37% and a provision that allows certain cash charitable deductions up to 60% of AGI.
The tax implications of charitable giving depend on your individual circumstances. Please note that the above information is not tax or financial advice, and we encourage you to consult with your financial advisor to determine how these changes may impact you. Please contact the Advancement Office at (540) 636-5206 or advancement@RMA.edu if we can assist with any questions about your charitable giving.
GIVE NOW
Give to the Annual Fund – and help a generation Rise!
A Randolph-Macon Academy education is an incredible investment in a student’s future. While tuition covers the majority of the cost, it takes more than that to make all that goes into the Yellow Jacket experience possible. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, the Academy has another critical source of revenue: the Annual Fund.
Gifts to the Annual Fund supplement tuition to support every student and cadet in every facet of their lives at R-MA – from academic excellence to character and leadership development, athletics, financial aid, and more. That’s why the Annual Fund is the Academy’s top fundraising priority. We encourage all members of the community to contribute by making a tax-deductible gift each year!
If you have any questions about supporting the Annual Fund, contact the Advancement Office at (540) 636-5206.
AREAS OF IMPACT
Many of R-MA’s donors prefer to give in support of a specific passion or interest. Within the Annual Fund, you can choose to designate your gift to one of several areas of impact, or you can designate it for the area of greatest need. Whichever you choose, your contributions make an immediate difference for our students and cadets and power the Academy’s mission: to inspire the RISE within!
Area of Greatest Need
Directing your gift to R-MA’s area of greatest need gives the Academy the flexibility to respond to immediate needs and use your gift where it will do the most good.
Financial Aid
R-MA is committed to a community of passionate, driven, and motivated students from a variety of backgrounds, independent of their financial circumstances.
