How R-MA’s Learning Support Program Helps Every Student Thrive

Every student learns differently, and at Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA), we believe that’s something to celebrate, not something to overcome. Some students thrive in structured environments; others need a little extra guidance to unlock their full potential. That’s why R-MA’s Learning Support Program was created, to ensure every cadet has the tools, encouragement, and personalized attention they need to grow academically and personally.

Through compassionate instruction and skill-building strategies, the Learning Support Program helps students gain confidence in their abilities while developing habits that lead to lasting success. Whether a student needs help staying organized, managing time, or strengthening executive functioning skills, our learning specialists meet them exactly where they are. The result is more than improved grades. It’s a renewed belief in one’s own ability to thrive in a challenging, college-preparatory environment.

Personalized Guidance for Every Learner

The Learning Support Program was created with one goal in mind: to help students reach their full academic potential. The program honors each student’s strengths while providing personalized strategies for overcoming challenges.

Some cadets in the program have been diagnosed with ADHD or executive functioning deficits, while others simply benefit from extra guidance in developing study habits, organization, or time management skills. Importantly, students do not need an official diagnosis to enroll. Families often recognize their child’s need for this kind of support based on past experiences in school.

Through small-group instruction (with no more than three students per session), the program teaches essential skills like prioritization, note-taking, metacognitive awareness, and goal setting. These sessions allow students to receive focused, individualized attention while also learning how to collaborate effectively with their peers.

Building Strong Academic Foundations

R-MA’s Learning Support Program is more than tutoring; it’s a structured approach to helping students become independent, confident learners. The school’s dedicated learning specialist works closely with students to develop executive functioning and study skills while offering direct academic support to address gaps in understanding across subject areas.

Students enrolled in the program benefit from:

  • Coordinated tutorial and learning lab times
  • Peer and external tutoring options (additional fees may apply for outside tutoring)
  • Weekly grade monitoring and progress reviews
  • Regular communication between faculty, parents, and the learning specialist

These layers of support ensure that each student not only meets immediate academic goals but also builds the self-advocacy and discipline needed for long-term success. There is an additional fee for this program.

Preparing for College and Beyond

The Learning Support Program extends far beyond day-to-day coursework. The learning specialist collaborates closely with the college counselors to ensure each student finds the post-secondary path that truly fits their abilities and goals. Together, they coach students on academic readiness, organization, and communication skills. All of which are key competencies for a successful transition to university life.

In this way, R-MA’s academic support model doesn’t just help students achieve better grades; it prepares them to handle the challenges of higher education with confidence and independence.
