Randolph-Macon Academy is pleased to announce our 2024 Summer Programs. R-MA is committed to providing a safe, fun and academically enriching experience for talented students for the following two Sessions:
Session I: Sunday, June 30 – Friday, July 12, 2024
Session II: Sunday, July 14 – Friday, July 26, 2024
Students may enroll in either one session, or two 2-week sessions consecutively, maximizing their learning opportunities to make the most of their summer break.
Upper School Summer School is for students rising to grades 9-12 featuring Aviation Summer Camp, Remedial and Enrichment Classes (for credit), and a Computer Science & Technology Course (non-credit).
Middle School Summer Enrichment is for students rising to grades 6-8 featuring schedules with enrichment classes (non-credit).
All students receive age-appropriate activities supervised by caring staff, an array of dining options and available dormitories complete with renovated lounges and dorm parents on each available floor.

Upper School Summer Courses
Remedial or Enrichment Classes:
Open to all high-school aged students rising to grades 9-12, R-MA provides classes where students can receive transferable high school credits upon successful completion from the following Remedial or Enrichment Classes:
Biology
A focus on the biological structures and their functions at multiple levels of organization in living organisms, as well as an exploration of the patterns, processes and systems within biology.
Geometry:
Students explore deductive, inductive, and analytic proofs through an examination of the properties of circles, triangles, and other figures. Students must take Geometry for all of Sessions I & II consecutively.
Algebra I:
Students learn basic algebraic concepts. They develop skills in simplifying expressions and solving equations and practice graphing linear and quadratic equations.
Algebra II:
Students delve into a higher level of mathematical thinking and greater skills in working with numbers, algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities.
English 9:
English 9 will focus on vocabulary, spelling and grammar strengthening. Students will also be introduced to literary analysis and various forms of essay writing.
English 10:
A focus on world literature and skills needed for well-researched and argued term papers.
English 11:
A focus on American literature and advanced research and writing skills needed for college-level preparation.
ESL – English as a Second Language:
Individualized instruction for all levels of English language learners. Focus is placed on reading and speaking skills as well as TOEFLⓇ testing material and American culture.
U.S. History
An overview of the development of the American nation and its world engagement from its foundation to the modern period.
World History
An overview of major historical events in the eastern and western hemispheres from 1450 to the present.
World Religion
An overview of the history and practices of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism and the cultures that surround them today.
Art and Community Course:
Students will immerse themselves in what it means to use art to connect with the community. The program will discuss how art can be used to beautify and transform the feeling of places like hospitals, senior centers and public places through murals and sculptures. Students will choose from a variety of options and create their own community minded project.
Computer Science & Technology Course:
Students learn key concepts in the following areas over a two-week session:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Cybersecurity
- Coding
- Robotics
This course is 70-hours in its entirety and is non-credit bearing. Because of its intensive nature, this Course cannot be combined with a remedial or enrichment course. Students will participate in Field Trips to nearby business and university campuses to see the latest technology trends in action.

Middle School Summer Camp
Course Descriptions
Open to all students rising to grades 6-8, R-MA provides a dynamic and enriching experience for students to explore a myriad of subjects designed to gauge intellectual curiosity and development. Embark on a transformative journey at our two-week long summer camp, where young minds come alive with creativity, innovation, and leadership skills. Each morning, participants dive into a diverse array of classes tailored to nurture their passions and interests. Unleash your artistic flair in our art sessions, explore the world of sound and technology in Music Tech, captivate audiences with riveting performances in the Performance class covering public speaking and plays, tackle exciting STEM challenges that ignite curiosity and problem-solving skills, and elevate your physical prowess with invigorating fitness activities.
But the adventure doesn’t end there – afternoons are dedicated to Leadership Training, a dynamic program designed to shape tomorrow’s leaders. Engage in interactive workshops, team-building exercises, and mentorship sessions led by experienced instructors. Learn the art of effective communication, decision-making, and collaboration, setting the stage for personal growth and empowerment. At our summer camp, we don’t just inspire creativity; we cultivate leadership qualities that will leave a lasting impact. Join us for an unforgettable experience where learning, fun, and leadership seamlessly come together.
Course & Activity Descriptions
Art
Students can expect to work and make 2D and 3D artwork from a variety of materials. Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of design as a method for understanding, appreciating, criticizing, and producing both 2D and 3D artwork.
Music Technology
In this class, students will learn music theory, digital composition, and recording techniques using school and student computers, creating electronic music, while remaining true to the timelessness of the piano.
Performance – Public Speaking/Plays
Students will work collaboratively to practice acting skills, produce plays, study films/productions, and explore backstage theater. They will also work collaboratively and singularly to practice their public speaking skills through themed speeches, debate, monologues, and impromptu game-oriented learning. Students will work towards group and individual presentations.
STEM Challenges
Dive into a world of discovery and innovation as students unleash their inner scientist, engineer, and problem solver as they embark on an exhilarating journey of hands-on experiments, mind-bending puzzles, and cutting-edge technology. This class is designed to encourage students into an exploration of knowledge, innovation, and fun!
Fitness
Students should expect to break a sweat and unleash their inner athlete during this energy-packed experience where fun meets fitness, and every heartbeat brings them closer to a healthier, happier you. Students will experience workouts, interactive games, and teamwork challenges.
Leadership
Students will ignite their leadership journey with our immersive program that seamlessly blends essential leadership topics, invigorating team-building activities, and effective communication strategies. Dive into the heart of teamwork dynamics as we explore the art of collaboration and emphasize the power of unity in achieving common goals. From inspiring community service initiatives to leadership in sports, discover the transformative impact of leadership in action. Engage in hands-on experiences that foster growth, resilience, and a sense of responsibility.
Mentoring
Mentoring is an integral part of what we do, not only during the summer, but throughout the school year. Mentors provide an adult on campus to help guide and support the students. Mentoring groups are created based on gender and grade level, covering age-appropriate topics such as relationship building, respect, and the impact of our thoughts.
Evening Activities
Evening dorm activities vary and may include swimming, movies in the quad, campfires and s’mores, and so much more.
Weekend Trip
Weekend trips will vary and may include ax throwing, escape rooms, roller skating, or indoor rock climbing.

Aviation Summer Camp (Grades 9-12)
We are thrilled to offer one of our most popular summer programs, now more robust than ever. Aviation Summer Camp is offered in both Sessions I & II where each session is two-weeks in length. This comprehensive program includes the following courses open to students rising to grades 9-12:
Flight Training
Students explore Aviation by training in R-MA aircraft and simulators as well as learn from guest speakers and taking weekly field trips. Students receive first-class instruction in the air and on the ground while discovering unlimited opportunities in aviation careers.
Drone Applications
The Summer Aviation Camp also includes instruction for unmanned aviation, or drones. Students participate in hands-on flight training for aerial photography, advanced data collection for mapping and 3D modeling. Students may also complete the FAA remote pilot certification.
There is a 12-student maximum for each Session.
Dormitories
R-MA is proud to offer dormitories with renovated student lounges and caring dorm parents on each floor. Middle and Upper School students are housed in separate dorm buildings. Students are further separated by gender.
All dorm rooms are equipped with a bed, desk, closet and central air-conditioning. Upper School Female dorm rooms are equipped with a private bathroom. Upper School Male dorm rooms include a sink and hallway bathrooms are available on each floor. Middle School Dorms feature hallway bathrooms separated by gender.
Newly renovated student lounges include comfortable, inviting seating arrangements and individual workspaces. An array of ping pong, foosball and air-hockey tables await with flat screen TVs for movie and trivia nights.
Activities
Students are provided with a variety of activities taking place on the R-MA campus and in nearby surrounding areas. On-campus activities take place on our 135-acre campus which include scavenger hunts, paintball sessions, outdoor and indoor movie viewings, game nights, campfires with s’mores as well as free-time for students to relax.
Off-campus activities are abundant and truly add to the summer experience. Such activities include:

Dining Services
A true highlight of the summer, R-MA offers a variety of dining options during the summer. Students enjoy freshly prepared meals from internationally inspired cuisines as well as an array of organic vegetable options and fresh-cut fruit – daily! Dessert options are also available on a daily basis.
