A bit jarring, isn’t it? This remarkable volume, so filled with earnest and joyful young faces…and then: a weathered, much older visage! I confess that’s what I see, but it isn’t how I feel each day of this, the most challenging and rewarding work I’ve ever done.
I was raised on a farm in Alabama, tending black angus cattle in the winters and deckhanding on charter boats in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer. These formative years were shaped by the self-discipline that my Depression-era parents taught me and the faith I developed, as my relationship with God matured into something tangible that could guide my actions in the challenging years that would follow. My mother and father were hardworking middle-class Americans, who wanted their three sons to become successful in every way. After college, I served our Air Force for over 25 years in posts from a deployed A-10 Group in the deserts of Kuwait to intelligence oversight duties in the White House.
My best teachers were those who set high standards for academic achievement and personal behavior and, despite changing times, they never relented on those requirements. My teachers believed, as my parents did, that hard work was its own reward and that integrity never went out of style. I’ve built my professional life on these precepts and I came to work at R-MA in 2015, because I could see it was a community steeped in and enthusiastically practicing the values my parents and teachers tried to bequeath to me.
Our students are questing, stretching, learning, growing young heroes to me…flawed and yet tireless, imaginative and exhausted, all at once. They come here from every imaginable background and from locations around the globe. They are united by their growing grasp of our standards, our expectations, and our aspirations for their limitless future.
None of this is easy and all of it is inspiring! My best days are spent with students who have seen what is possible when their differences from each other become less important than the values we share; when the team’s performance matters more than individual glory; when God’s Grace is made manifest to our cadets in the most routine of moments…or in the most profound.
Routine moments, like joyous celebrations of victories shared, and profound moments spent in reflection on timeless values embodied by a treasured teacher. What more could one hope to give to a child?
