Grit: it’s a word you’ve heard many times, in many different ways. But what does this word mean as far as a child’s development is concerned? Essentially, grit, or GRIT, can be short for four words: growth, resilience, integrity, and tenacity. If your child is already showing extreme resolve, bravery, and determination in order to reach personal goals and overcome adversity, they already have a strong sense of grit. This comes from being calm, strong, and confident in the face of major challenges in life.
Grit helps improve one’s ability to stand up in the face of obstacles. It can also help students develop into more self-assured, responsible adults at university and beyond. Here’s why grit is an important quality for students to develop at our school.
What Does Grit Consist Of? And What Does it Mean?
As mentioned earlier, grit involves four key concepts: growth, resilience, integrity, and tenacity. Growth can mean the ability to take failures as an opportunity for learning and improving. Resilience is about facing adversity, and rebounding from it to come back stronger than ever. More specifically, it involves finding the courage to face intimidating situations, overcome one’s fear of failure, and continue working toward a goal even after taking hits and experiencing bumps along the way.
Having grit is about being tenacious, staying focused, and never giving up
Integrity is an aspect that students at our private boarding school will be familiar with, as it is one of the core values of both the Air Force and R-MA’s approach to teaching students. It’s representative of a person staying true to themselves, pursuing what they’ve set their mind to, and never straying from who they really are. Lastly, tenacity is all about never giving up. Staying persistent in the pursuit of one’s goals without quitting is one of the key components of what grit truly means.
