Why Is Grit so Essential to Success? Find out at Our Private School Academy

Grit: it’s a word you’ve heard many times, in many different ways. But what does this word mean as far as a child’s development is concerned? Essentially, grit, or GRIT, can be short for four words: growth, resilience, integrity, and tenacity. If your child is already showing extreme resolve, bravery, and determination in order to reach personal goals and overcome adversity, they already have a strong sense of grit. This comes from being calm, strong, and confident in the face of major challenges in life.

Grit helps improve one’s ability to stand up in the face of obstacles. It can also help students develop into more self-assured, responsible adults at university and beyond. Here’s why grit is an important quality for students to develop at our school.

What Does Grit Consist Of? And What Does it Mean?

As mentioned earlier, grit involves four key concepts: growth, resilience, integrity, and tenacity. Growth can mean the ability to take failures as an opportunity for learning and improving. Resilience is about facing adversity, and rebounding from it to come back stronger than ever. More specifically, it involves finding the courage to face intimidating situations, overcome one’s fear of failure, and continue working toward a goal even after taking hits and experiencing bumps along the way.

Having grit is about being tenacious, staying focused, and never giving up

Integrity is an aspect that students at our private boarding school will be familiar with, as it is one of the core values of both the Air Force and R-MA’s approach to teaching students. It’s representative of a person staying true to themselves, pursuing what they’ve set their mind to, and never straying from who they really are. Lastly, tenacity is all about never giving up. Staying persistent in the pursuit of one’s goals without quitting is one of the key components of what grit truly means.

A student’s grit and determination can push them towards their goals

Why Should Students at Our Private Boarding School Know What Grit Is?

In her famous TED Talk, psychologist Angela Duckworth describes grit as “passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.” Duckworth developed this concept while working as a seventh-grade math teacher, upon recognizing that her most intelligent students were not always her highest-achieving ones. She noticed how a sense of commitment and determination was most important to achieving personal objectives. Even if certain tasks may feel difficult to complete, one’s sense of perseverance and passion can see them through and get the job done.

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why students at our private school academy develop grit is that, regardless of whether or not someone has a high IQ, creativity, decision-making skills, pure talent, or any similar type of attribute, showcasing a sense of grit and perseverance is key to achieving success. Even if the person next to you is just as smart as you and has as much natural ability in a chosen field as you, neither of those things matter if they don’t have the motivation or enthusiasm necessary to capitalize on those traits.

All the intelligence in the world may not amount to much without also being accompanied by the ability to be extremely tenacious and resilient. Being able to rebound from failure can determine whether or not a child reaches their full potential as they get older and gain further life experience. Even if there are obstacles and road bumps en route to your child accomplishing their life goals, their sense of grit will be what helps determine how successful they are in accomplishing them.
