Boarding students make up 80% of the student body at Randolph-Macon Academy and become a community of mature, self-governed, and respectful young adults. This is thanks to our Residential Life Curriculum that cultivates a wholesome and productive living environment, where cadets and staff take ownership of dorm life.
Under the guidance of Cadet Life Supervisors (CLSs), students develop their communication skills, experience independent living, and build lifelong habits. Through a structured schedule that combines study sessions, exciting weekend excursions, and ample social activities, students find a space for personal growth and lasting friendships. Read on to learn how the Residential Life Curriculum adds to the experience at our boarding school.
A Chance to Connect With Your Peers at Our Boarding School
The Residential Life faculty aims to foster a caring and involved atmosphere through a curriculum that prioritizes positive communication. Through open discussions between cadets and CLSs, students learn about how their choices affect those around them, appropriate relationship building, respect for others, and dealing proactively with roommate challenges. Within that space, students find opportunities to form lasting friendships based on mutual respect.
Exciting social activities are another staple of the experience at our boarding school. We offer a variety of events upon which the cadets decide, including outdoor movie nights, a Christmas banquet, an Easter Egg Hunt, and weekend excursions. In an informal setting, students make memories that will last a lifetime in a welcoming community.
Explore Topics of Interest Outside the Classroom
The purpose of the Residential Life Curriculum at our private school is to educationally and socially prepare students for college life and beyond. In the process of becoming caring and responsible young people, students will engage in open discussions with CLSs that aim to improve their awareness of relevant topics of interest. These include discussions on the use of technology, cyber-bullying, sexting, adherence to the honor code, religious and cultural diversity, and demonstrating positive leadership. In an inclusive, small-group format, cadets are encouraged to bring their own ideas for discussion.
At the same time, students have the chance to actively participate in the Residential Life program by taking leadership roles as student representatives, who meet with a faculty member to discuss dorm, academic, and community issues. Town Hall meetings are also held once each quarter, giving both boarding and day students the opportunity to voice questions or concerns. By taking an active role in boarding life, students graduate with an awareness of civil dialogues, a strong sense of identity, and the self-governance to transition seamlessly into college.
Supporting the Academic Performance of Students
Developing healthy lifestyle habits from a young age is key to cultivating success in school, college, and beyond. As a boarding school, our Residential Life program becomes an extension of the academic environment. Students can enjoy supervised study-hour sessions on a daily basis in a structured and supportive environment. The residential life faculty work closely with the academic faculty to ensure that homework is being completed while giving students the personal and social support they need to maximize their academic performance. With the boarding experience at R-MA, students can rest assured that they’re getting the most out of their school years.
