Our entire school, including faculty, staff, and the student body at Randolph-Macon Academy, is dedicated to creating strong, confident leaders of the future. Whether through class projects, the Air Force Junior ROTC program and more, students have plenty of opportunities to develop grit, leadership skills and many other important qualities. Together, these experiences help to create an academic resume that stands out from the pack, helping students shine as they prepare their university applications. In fact, 100% of our graduating class gained acceptance to university – including some of the top universities in the country and around the world.
Among our many offerings designed to foster leadership, Cadre Leadership Training provides an opportunity that you can’t easily find anywhere else. Read on to learn more about our Cadre Leadership Training and the lessons that students can gain from it.
A Summer Program Dedicated to Teamwork and Positive Attitudes
The Cadre Leadership Training offered by our prep school is a weeklong summer opportunity for selected, highly motivated juniors and seniors to engage in practical leadership training. R-MA is constantly looking at ways for students to add meaningful experiences to their college resumes, and Cadre Leadership Training is another great asset for them to have under their belt.
This summer experience demands the best from participants as they strengthen their leadership skills and learn the value of teamwork and a positive attitude. Working in small groups, students are able to collaborate with other strong, motivated individuals in order to solve prepared problem situations. They will also be able to compete in new drill events and prepare to teach new students the ropes as they begin their academic careers at R-MA.
Developing Leadership Skills and Grit
With leadership as the focus of this week-long training program, students who participate in Cadre Leadership Training have the opportunity to really strengthen this essential skill. They learn how to foster teamwork and lead their teams through challenging situations, as well as develop the grit necessary to persevere. Skills learned in this summer leadership course also spill over into the school year, benefitting the participating students as well as their classmates. Juniors and seniors work together to conduct day-to-day operations of the Cadet Corps, which includes drill practice, parade preparation, dormitory and classroom leadership and more.
Applying Skills to Help New Members of Our College Prep School
Students who graduate from the program are ranked with a final promotion ceremony, assuming top leadership positions in the Corps. Students who hold these positions take on an important role within our community, as they help and guide new students throughout the year at our college prep school.
A vital part of the R-MA curriculum is leadership and character development. Just as important, however, is the ability of students to apply these skills and use them to better the experiences of others. During their Cadre Leadership Training, students develop their teamwork, communication skills and character traits of selflessness, service and integrity. Being able to in turn use these skills to help guide, support and lead younger students is a rewarding experience for all those who participate in Cadre Leadership Training.
Students work to develop their people skills as they interact with their peers daily. In the classroom, they work on important written and oral communication skills to improve both their one on one interactions as well as their public speaking abilities. The structured environment at R-MA means that students graduate well-prepared for the next chapter of their academic life.
They are able to achieve such personal growth with the supervision and guidance of a number of role models on campus, including their assigned faculty mentor who is committed to helping students and reporting back to parents on their progress. When students choose R-MA, they are choosing to forego the easy route and dedicate themselves to real growth to succeed in high school and beyond.
