How Our Boarding School Creates an Inclusive Experience in the Dorms

Boarding school is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that every student should have. At Randolph-Macon Academy, we are pleased to offer a safe, supportive environment for students to connect with their peers and focus on their personal and academic growth.

Boarding students make up 80% of our student body on campus. With students coming from across the U.S. and around the world, creating an inclusive experience for every individual is a top priority at our boarding school. Everything from our Residential Life Program to our hands-on boarding staff to our weekend activities is geared towards making sure every student feels welcome on campus. Below, find out what makes the boarding experience at R-MA so great.

Teaching Respect for Others in Dorm Life

Life at our boarding school is built around community-centered values. The goal is to ensure that every student feels heard, valued, and respected in their living space while extending the same courtesy to their peers.

All cadets participate in a weekly Residential Life Curriculum focusing on life, civil communication, and positive choice-making skills. Cadet Life Supervisors (CLSs) work with the students, helping them develop the communication skills and maturity needed to become thoughtful members of society. This curriculum focuses on promoting equal ownership of the residence life environment, improving communications to cultivate better social skills, and promoting the residence as an extension of the classroom and home.

When every student is on board with the values and morals of the dorm environment, we are able to foster good-natured relationships and a caring, involved atmosphere.

Get Involved in Fun Activities

What is a community without some fun? To make each and every student feel like part of the dorm community, we offer engaging activities for everyone to participate in. This gives students plenty of time to socialize with their peers outside of school and get to know new students outside of their academic circle. From outdoor movie nights and dances to a Christmas banquet, our 135-acre campus offers plenty of activities for students right on their doorstep.

But that’s not all. Our boarding high school regularly organizes overnight trips and other excursions to get students out and about. This includes trips to museums, laser tag, Shenandoah National Park, as well as overnight trips to New York City and Washington D.C. R-MA even has a hot air balloon right on campus.

These kinds of activities are where the community spirit of our boarding school comes alive, creating a fun, welcoming, and memorable living experience for every student.

Supportive Resources for All Students at Our Boarding School

We understand the challenges of living away from home and how big of an adjustment it can be for our boarding students. That’s why our caring staff are ready to make the transition as easy as possible. The caring and responsible adults who supervise the boarding school environment include three R-MA alumni, two ordained ministers, a former social worker, and four athletic coaches.

Between all of our dorm supervisors, a total of seven foreign languages are spoken, including French, Spanish, Arabic, German, Hebrew, and Greek. These professionals aim to make every student feel part of the boarding family, in the process becoming the “R-MA Dad” or “R-MA Mom” to dozens of students each year. Not to mention our Big Brother, Big Sister, and Cadre Leadership initiatives encourage students to become supportive outlets for one another, building a sense of comradery in the community.
