On Thursday, March 14, 2019, Randolph-Macon Academy’s varsity girls’ track team swept the quad track meet held at Page County High School, defeating the home team as well as teams from Luray High School and Strasburg High School. It was the first time in anyone’s recent memory that the R-MA girls had accomplished this feat.
Senior Khalila Karefa-Kargbo led the ten-person team to victory, as she claimed first place in the 100-meter dash (13.38 seconds), the 100-meter hurdles (18.81 seconds), the long jump (15 feet, 11.75 inches), third in the 200-meter dash (29.71 seconds) and the triple jump (30 feet, 4.5 inches) and fifth in the high jump (4 feet). Altogether, Karefa-Kargbo earned 25 of the team’s 73.5 points.
Senior Caroline Starling, who is the defending state champion in both the high jump and the shot put, easily claimed victory in both of those events and earned 12 points for the Yellow Jackets. She cleared 5 feet, four inches in the high jump, six inches higher than the second place finisher, Mariah Boston from Luray. In shot put, Starling threw 34 feet, eight inches, more than four feet further than the second place finisher, Eva Brill of Strasburg.
Eighth grader Sam Bai had a strong showing as well, taking first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:50, and second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:47, earning a total of ten points for R-MA.
Luray finished second in the meet with 68.5 points, Strasburg finished third with 57 points, and Page County took fourth with 28 points.
