As a college preparatory school, Randolph-Macon Academy offers an education that looks to the future. We work to expand the opportunities for our students during and beyond high school, with programs specifically designed to promote success at a higher education level. Dual Enrollment is the perfect example of this.
Dual enrollment at R-MA refers to students who wish to take college classes while still enrolled in our high school. Those students will receive academic credit – or dual credit – from both R-MA and the university that they study at. With a choice of over 10 dual-enrolled classes, many R-MA students have accumulated college credits at universities across Virginia and beyond. If this sounds like the path for you, read on to learn more about what dual enrollment at R-MA has to offer!
Who is Dual Enrollment for?
Dual enrollment is a challenging stream that requires commitment and a strong academic background. R-MA Juniors (Grade 11) and Seniors (Grade 12) who are enrolled in select advanced courses are eligible for dual-enrolled status. Freshmen (Grade 9) and Sophomores (Grade 10) who are enrolled in the same courses must be approved for dual enrollment by the relevant college president or dean.
Colleges and universities will require high school students to apply to their schools through an online application. The deadlines for these applications are usually by the end of September for the Fall semester and the end of January for the Spring semester. Depending on the college you choose, you may need to earn a minimum entrance test score or SAT score. A representative from the R-MA Academic Office will initiate the application process with each dual-enrolled class and assist with any application, testing, and payment needs.
What Kind of Courses Are on Offer?
For high school students, dual enrollment can expose them to a range of courses on offer and give them a taste of study at the higher education level. This serves as a valuable stepping stone to choosing your college major in the future.
Many colleges and universities will offer dual-enrolled status to courses that match the curriculum of their own college survey courses. Those courses will be taught by an R-MA instructor who has the appropriate degree credentials. For example, students can earn credit at Shenandoah University for courses in English, History, Math, and Psychology. Likewise, at Lord Fairfax Community College, students can earn credit for courses in Chemistry, French, and Environmental Sciences.
With exposure to college-level instruction at our prep school, R-MA students gain the knowledge and experience to make informed decisions for their future studies.
The Benefits of Dual-Enrollment at Our Preparatory School
Dual enrollment is primarily designed to give high school students exposure to college study and give them a leg up on their university degrees. R-MA offers advanced teaching and learning in dual-enrolled classes with Shenandoah University and Lord Fairfax Community College. As a result, students can enter into their college years with a better understanding of what to expect, greater confidence in their academic abilities, and the skills to handle college life, such as time management and study habits.
Most importantly, students with dual-enrolled status at our preparatory school earn transferable college credits for a high school course. This can shorten the road to a college degree, saving time and money in the process. In fact, many R-MA graduates have gone on to colleges, having accumulated enough credits to fulfill an entire freshman year of university studies.
If you’re looking to challenge yourself with a rewarding path to college success, dual enrollment at R-MA is the perfect opportunity.
