There’s no doubt that our students achieve great success with their college applications, as shown by our graduates’ 100% college acceptance rate year after year. With so many variables affecting college applications, including grades, student preferences, extracurricular activities, and more, it’s difficult to determine what matters most. So, how do Randolph-Macon Academy students do it?
A combination of our academic curriculum, boarding experiences, and opportunities on and off campus allows students to stand out from the competition across the country. While students have to put in the hard work to reach their full potential, R-MA has mastered setting each student up for success. Continue reading to find out how we help R-MA students stand out on college applications.
1. Experience With Leadership and Character Development
Our students who are a part of our AFJROTC program have another level of dedication, commitment, and character that immediately shows on their resumes. With the time, energy, and dedication our students give to this program, they instantly reflect maturity and an understanding of hard work.
At each level, students receive focused, timely, and effective schooling in leadership principles, teamwork, and strong communication techniques. Character traits of selflessness, service, and integrity come from their participation in the program. These are strengthened by navigating group dynamics, improving stress management, and deploying leadership skills when the opportunity arises. All of these qualities, highlighted by our unique AFJROTC program, help students stand out when it comes time to apply to university.
2. Active and Consistent Community Involvement
The curious nature of our students has taught us, over the last 125 years, that they deserve to be challenged. Not only does this refer to the academic curriculum, but also what students get up to outside of their classes. We pride ourselves on our ability to nurture students’ young minds at our college prep school. This means giving them the opportunity to see and experience the world around them and helping them discover the difference they can make while they’re here.
On and off campus, students gather to support one another as well as other members of our community. Whether they’re visiting an elderly home to help out with the landscaping, or they’re assisting in the assessment and protection of our natural environment in the Shenandoah Valley, students are always thinking bigger than themselves. This level of community service not only shows commitment with the number of hours they spend each semester doing community work but also their desire to contribute to the betterment of others, which will add value to any college campus.
3. Prep School AP Level Courses and Advanced Programs
The class of 2022 at R-MA consisted of 59 students, all of whom were accepted into college. These students received over $16.6 million in scholarships combined, showing how valuable they truly are to these higher education institutions. With acceptances over the years to top universities–including Cornell University, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and more–our students’ academic resumes prove to be incredibly strong.
Having access to 19 AP courses at our prep school and 10 Dual Enrollment courses gives their GPA a competitive edge. Access doesn’t automatically ensure admission to college, but the combination of the academic support students receive, their experiences in their community, and their commitment to hard work help them get there.
College applications are multifaceted, and various factors play a role in the decision these universities make. Upper school students at R-MA become more than prepared to take on these challenges and exceed their own expectations.
