Responsibility is a life skill that doesn’t come naturally to all individuals, and Randolph-Macon Academy recognizes that. That’s why we work hard to help our students learn how to become responsible in their own lives, as well as responsible contributors to their communities. We incorporate this sentiment in everyday life at R-MA, allowing students to take ownership of their academic and personal development.
R-MA graduates excel in their ability to adapt to college dorm life, perform academically in the classroom, and make meaningful connections with their peers and communities. This stems from a unified approach to life skill development on campus through academics, extracurriculars, and dedicated faculty and staff members. Read on to learn more about how we foster responsibility in our students.
1. Our Residential Life Curriculum Helps Students Build Essential Life Skills
Students who choose the boarding option at our coed private school get to experience our residential life curriculum, which serves as an extension of our academic environment. We believe that education does not end in the classroom, which is why Cadet Life Supervisors (CLS) work with students in the dorms to develop the communication skills and maturity needed to become successful, self-governed young adults. The CLS succeed in these efforts by discussing important topics with students, including how choices affect those around them, appropriate relationship building, respect for self and others, time management, and more.
Dorm life has often been described by former students as “living with your friends,” with comfortable and safe buildings and a family-like environment. This close-knit community feel at R-MA gives students plenty of opportunities to form close friendships. Within this welcoming and friendly environment, students learn to feel comfortable and confident as they develop essential life skills and grow into responsible individuals.
2. The Honor Code at Our Boarding School Helps Foster Responsibility
Here at our boarding school, students, faculty, and staff alike abide by our campus Honor Code. The Honor Code is based upon three core beliefs: mutual trust, honesty, and respect for others. These values work together to foster responsibility. We trust our students to act with honesty and respect, both inside and outside the classroom.
The trust that we place in our students takes on many forms. Advanced technology found around campus at R-MA, including in the Hydroponics Lab, the Innovation Lab, and the Unmanned Systems Lab, teach students how to respect their surroundings and take care of their equipment. Leadership positions within the Air Force JROTC teach students how to act with integrity, selflessness, and service. And volunteer opportunities teach students how to impact their communities for the better. In these ways and many others, students learn to act with responsibility and integrity in all aspects of their lives.
3. College Counseling Lets Students Take Responsibility for Their Futures
College counseling at R-MA begins in Grade 9 and consists of a comprehensive College Readiness Program, college visits, college fairs, and more to help students with the college application process. Students receive personalized guidance on their academic goals, and are held accountable as they work towards achieving them. This level of responsibility teaches R-MA students how their efforts and commitment impact their futures.
Our approach to college preparation has a proven track record: Our graduates have maintained a 100% college acceptance rate over the years. Each student at R-MA is given the liberty to pursue their passions, strengthen their abilities, and build their personal skill sets. That freedom, combined with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility, helps students pinpoint their goals and then take the steps needed to achieve them.
