Randolph-Macon Academy alumni regularly describe our dorms and the atmosphere around campus as feeling very much like home. Beyond this, however, our boarding school has come to be highly regarded for providing students with a unique blend of academic rigor, leadership development, and cultural diversity.
While living and studying in our boarding school environment can be challenging, it also provides students with many opportunities to grow and develop essential life skills. In this blog post, we will explore three key ways that our boarding school students maintain structure and balance while forging solid connections and developing into well-rounded and responsible members of our community.
1. Essential Leadership Skills Through Our Rigorous Residential Life Curriculum
Our boarding school places a strong emphasis on developing leadership skills in our students. Through our Residential Life Program, which is an extension of the academic environment, our cadets are exposed to a variety of leadership styles and opportunities to practice their own leadership skills. Throughout the program, students have the opportunity to lead by example, learning how their choices affect others and not just them, gaining respect for themselves and others, as well as personal integrity and appropriate relationship building skills. Engaging our cadets in civil dialogue over age-appropriate matters helps instill and cultivate leadership skills in them.
Our Residential Life Curriculum also throws up several opportunities for cadets to occupy leadership positions. Whether through student government, service projects, or other extracurricular activities, our boarding school students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and responsibilities. This experience helps them to build confidence, communication skills, and the ability to work with others, all of which are critical components of effective leadership.
Opportunities for Creative Expression Through Our Residential Life Curriculum
At our private high school, we believe in the individuality of every student. Our approach encourages every student to bring their originality, creativity, and resourcefulness to the forefront on their way to reaching their full potential.
With this in mind, our Residential Life Curriculum incorporates various opportunities for each of our cadets to be heard, as well as scenarios where they can apply and exercise their creativity, quick thinking, and resourcefulness. During their stay in our dorms, our cadets receive guidance, along with input from them, on how to creatively solve academic and real-life problems, such as getting along with their roommates, coping with demanding parents, and navigating the challenging environment of the boarding school.

With several opportunities for good-natured competition, our cadets also learn to work well with others and contribute their creativity toward solving everyday problems. This is not only important for the individual student’s personal growth and development, but it also helps to foster a sense of community and shared experience within the boarding school. In addition, creative expression can help students understand their emotions better and develop their emotional intelligence, which can be beneficial both in their personal and professional lives.
Structure After Academics Through Our Residential Life Program
Structure is an important component of life in our boarding school. From a structured academic schedule to established routines for meal times and activities to set study and bedtimes, our boarding school provides students with a sense of predictability and stability. Each floor is staffed by a Cadet Life Supervisor to establish order and maintain safety in the dorms. Our Residential Life Curriculum also defines, stratifies, and fills our cadets’ schedules, ensuring their time is invested in profitable activities.
This structure can be especially important for students, as it helps to create a sense of security and stability that can benefit their mental health and well-being. Additionally, structure in our dorms provides students with the opportunity to establish good habits and routines that can carry over into their adult lives.
